The son of a Tournai sculptor, by 1418 he was living in the household of Robert Campin, ‘ouvrant de son mestier’, and earning his keep. Not until 1428 was he formally registered as Campin’s apprentice; after completing his four-year apprenticeship he became a master of the Tournai guild in 1432.
